Litespeed and cache, yay or nay?

Plesk isn't really a factor toward website optimization. Whatever config works on a development server can be re-used on a server running Plesk.
 
the major control panels all take resources, that's why most experienced admins shy away from them. I could probably hack it without one but it would take me a LOT more time to tweak, so i have a control panel to make things easy.

Going back to the OP, i'm not too familiar with it, but it sounds like guests are your issue, not members. Cloudflare is doing a lot of cool stuff right now with caching that may be even more beneficial for your use case - effectively caching at the edge instead of your local. https://blog.cloudflare.com/automatic-platform-optimizations-starting-with-wordpress/ i imagine this will extend beyond wordpress with an open api of sorts soon, or reverse-engineer the code to work on xf. it's all php...
