Linkification of Profile Website field.

The WEBSITE field in member profiles is a bit odd for a number of reasons.

1. It is totally blank and does not ask you to enter HTTPS://

2. Entering just the website does not function.

3. Entering it as www.website.com does not function.

4. You have to enter https://website.com

At minimum it should say you have to enter the https:// but quite honestly since that is no longer showing in the chrome browser some older users have no clue how to enter that properly.

Once the member does figure it out it looks odd in the member profile as https://website.com. When is the last time you saw a site published in this manner?

The member website field needs to be updated so the user can enter website.com and the output will display as website.com and be a clickable link in the profile.

I tried looking for an addon but could not find one nor could I figure out how to make this change so I thought I would put it to the Xenforo experts to see who has found a solution to this.

Seeing the URL in its proper format (i.e. with https://) doesn't phase me but I have been around since the beginning of the Web so I am using to it. Defaulting to https is not necessarily what you want, either, since there is still the odd site using http. Frankly, most people who are likely to use that field probably know to just copy and paste what's in the address bar on the page they are entering, which should give the correct URL. Most of my users only fill in the FB and maybe Twitter account fields if they have anything. I'm one of the few who uses the website field.

Defaulting to http:// is probably best, that prevents any errors.

You can get an error from http://
My name servers are pointing to Cloudflare, so if I do not use the https://it's possible for this error to pop up.
Right now it happens on mobile So I make sure to put the https://

You can add a new

  • Custom user field
As for the Website Links on my site, We use a Rich text box

This way I can add the type of Link you are referring to, or
You can add picture links.
Plus you can add the Alt/Tool-Tips hover effect this way.
So when users hover over the link, a small description will pop up.

Hope this suggestion could work for you.

Forgot to include these pictures from the member's view.
But this gives you a ton of options on editing the links.
I did it with images, but this could be a standard link.
Also all the images of the social websites, I provide for download in my resource manager. This way I keep my board looking clean and professional. Plus the social Links will stay the same size.

Its very close to what I need but I need a single line text box and the rich editor with all the BB stuff is overkill for a plain field.

This is a great starting point for me @oO5 Dynasty

I just have to experiment to see what adds the https:// or http:// for me

I do not know how to use the entire

So there might be other ways of implementing what you want.
I just don't know all of the functionality of CUF. Might be a template edit you will need to do also.
Somebody with more knowledge might be able to help. Cool!:)

I have come up with a temporary solution

I am going to make it a regular field where the member can enter anything they want.

Downside is it won't be clickable but I can have it display as plain Website.com in the profile.

I have decided to remove the website field completely.

It's actually redundant because you can just add your website to your signature or in the about section of the profile.

Anyone know how to remove the default website field in the profile without an addon.
I have a fair number of addons and am trying to limit them a bit.
