how do i get a link to look like this before hovering with mouse.

.messageText .username:hover should be the selector for that, allowing you to manipulate the hover attributes.

i'm sorry @Jeremy - meant - I would like all links in threads and posts to look like that.

It's a style property - search for ugc.

It's a style property. Search the Admin CP for ugc and a link to the relevant style properties will come up. There's one for links and one for hover links.

Copy the settings from the hover link (@ugcLinkHover) to the normal link (@ugcLink) and that will give you the hover effect on all links without hovering.
