They've probably evacuated; for as much as was destroyed, there has been a very low death rate.

I live in Santa Monica, and used to live closer to Brentwood which was under mandatory evacuation (it spread to the Brentwood hills, which was walking only a few blocks from my old house).

I'm in the valley, so the fires are nearby but not immediately threatening. But that could change any time, especially with the winds picking up again soon.
