XF 2.3 Klipy.com patch?

I don't suppose there's going to be a free patch to support Klipy (or the nth API when they want paid, too) for 2.3 license holders, is there?

Saw this coming a bit over a year ago, but it was beating a dead horse...

Now everyone who bought XF up until now and relied on Giphy will have to renew their license for potential GIF support, correct?

@Chris D posted this in another thread this morning, in fact. :)

@Chris D posted this in another thread this morning, in fact. :)

Yes, and that's why I posted this question in questions and support. (@Chris D can move these posts into that thread if he wishes.)

An expired 2.3.9 licensed customer (e.g. their license expires now) has to rely on Giphy (essentially no more GIFs on their forum), or because if you read Pages 1-4 of that where I forewarned of this exact predictable behavior and scenario based on past precedence of free image hosting (though with GIFs, there's an additional nuanced layer of licensing and who gets paid for how many GIFs shown with their intellectual property), will there be a Klipy, etc., patch available for free, if that's the route? Otherwise, for continuing GIF support, you'll need to renew your license.

Side note on past precedence: The predictable end game is a GIF that will insert on an embed* instead of an image. This is so that at any time they can change the 1000000s of GIFs already inserted and viewed across varying platforms (not only XF) to include a couple frames of an ad, taking care of it not having to be a paid service**. And then that company will, too, go into oblivion. This all has to do with licensing because Disney, et al., will keep pushing the fraction of a penny they want for each view of a Darth Vader (Star Wars) GIF. *unless they just continuously change ads in the GIF file, using more processor power **unless you want ad free GIFs

If you read through pages 1‐ of that thread you linked me, I tried to hammer this point home. Hard. Multiple times. Nobody understood it or chose to willfully ignore the economics behind this.

Now, we're here, chasing down Giphy replacements. The real question now is: Will XenForo do right by its customers as this was such a predictable move and issue a free patch, and for what license holders, or will customers need to renew their license each time there's a GIF hosted successor for continued GIF support?

Edit: I just noticed Klipy is an embed, so this is the terminal phase for GIFs already and whether they go bust is how intrusive they get and when. So, it might be the only and last replacement before the death of free hosted GIFs. After which, you'll have to scrub your forum's Klipy embeds to get rid of ads you never placed.

The situation hasn't changed. If you already have GIPHY API access, you will continue to have GIPHY API access. We aren't going to remove the GIPHY functionality. If you can get a key (there's no reason you can't or won't get approved) you can continue to use it.

The new issue is the proposed alternative to GIPHY was Tenor. Tenor is shutting down its API and therefore it's no longer viable as an alternative IF we ever implement an alternative.

If we implement an alternative, existing users of GIPHY will still be able to use GIPHY.

Stop making drama over nothing.

Sure, those that pay.
We're not paying anything. There is 1 (one) source claiming the API will be chargeable but it never has been. It continues to be free as before.

I just noticed Klipy is an embed
This is nonsense, btw. They provide direct access images.

As of now, which makes my argument fundamentally weak, in the present, and almost moot. The latter only being because the XenForo support policy change of when a new 2nd point release is made, the previous one is no longer supported. So, you'll have users using 2.3 for the next, say 3-5 years, able to use GIPHY, but unable to afford it, requiring to renew for 2.4 with Klipy when they're inevitably priced out (if that is the feature they must have) when a 2.3 patch could include it as GIF support, albeit GIPHY, was introduced then.

Ok. That still doesn't change the original theory when I thought they weren't* embeds, that you just confirmed won't be handled that way if used (see post edit times to verify if you wish).

No more "drama" nor replies from me in this thread, unless asked a direct question (not going to have a rebuttal to any statement made otherwise to tow the line) so no need to take further action.

From what I gather:
  • Continued GIPHY support for 2.3 (to be determined about pricing in the future that carries no weight).
  • No patch for customers that choose to stick to 2.3 before/when 2.4 is released for continued GIF support when GIPHY implements pricing (no remindme bot, but if the Tenor thread didn't predict as much...).
Have a great one!

That’s been the case since version 1.1 btw.

“Inevitably priced out” based on exactly one blog post that appears to be completely made up.
