Kier I blamed you!

The 400 ƒ2.8 makes a stunning portrait lens when used from the back of the church during a wedding ceremony :)
True, but the 300 is better fit for my needs plus its smaller, lighter and was significantly less expensive... I picked up the 300, along with Nikon 35mm f/1.4 and 24-120mm f/4 lenses for less than the cost of the 400mm /f2.8. :)

For photographer's it's not a matter of NEED ...
[[[it's want !]]]

No, it pretty much is a matter of need. Most professional photographers will have at least 3 bodies for a shoot, and an assortment of lenses ready for different purposes.

A hobbyist photographer can probably make do with a single body, and maybe 3 lenses, but Kier is clearly not a hobbyist photographer.

You don't NEED all of those things.
You want them.
For people in love with photography, things go beyond need. It's not a matter of need.
It's a matter of want.

need v. want
need v. want
Picture it this way: Why does a surgeon need all those tools? He could really just get away with using a scalpel, some stitches, and some gauze. If it needs cutting, use the scalpel, if it needs closing, use the stitches, and if needs to be compress, use the gauze. It's silly to have a whole tray, not to mention room, full of equipment.

It does actually beg the question, why have you got more than one of the same camera Kier?

I wondered that also, I can fully understand you having one other identical back-up camera in case one fails at a big event like a wedding shoot. But why 3 of the same model?

And you would know this, how??? Are you a professional photographer?

A professional photographer always, ALWAYS, has several backups. Ask any pro.

Um ....
Nevermind ?
I understand the utility of having lots of cameras on the go ... a backup ... a backup to a backup ... lots of lenses ... yes ... I understand all that. What is need and what is want ... is all a matter of perspective.
#1) I didn't question the NEED. Andy.N did.
#2) I suspect Kier's passion goes beyond need.

I have 5 cameras, 5 video cameras, 3 cell phones which take pictures ... and I'm still looking for more video cameras. I don't think I need all of that equipment. I do want and love and enjoy it.

My jab at Andy.N was to not bring up the question of need to a man in love with photography.
I'm feeling like my kind-hearted "jab" @Andy.N didn't resonate as I intended.

Forsaken: your insults are predictable.
Peggy: Kier said he was an hobbyist photographer.

Oxygen = Need. Thousands of dollars of hobbyist equipment = Want.

I could go on, but suffice it to say that while a photographer can get by with just three lenses (or just a single lens, actually), it's simply not correct to say that there is no need for others in order to shoot particular subjects under particular conditions.
Well, like most things it comes down to Budgets & what you're shooting. Primes defintely do have their advantages, don't get me wrong and perhaps I'm not really enough of a photographer to fully appreciate them. Personally I prefer the flexibility of a good quality zoom.

Unless you've got a budget the size of Kier's though, 3 will normally suffice ;)

That said, I did have a superb 50mm 1.8 prime lens the first time around. It was good, but it never got used - I simply took a zoom around instead! Far more flexible.

Primes probably come into their own if you're studio based doing portraits or you have multiple bodies and can leave one permanently attached to one body and a zoom on another.

It really is a slippery slope into the darkside though, to be honest, there's always another lens that is whispering 'buy me, buy me'. Normally with 4 figure price tags :(

I will admit though, once you go from enthusiast to semi-professional, you start needing more bodies and lenses, I never got past the enthusiast stage ;)

Because if you are responsible for shooting a once-in-a-lifetime event and your camera breaks, you better be damned sure you have a backup.

Ah, so now we know what Kier got up to in the year after he left IB/Jelsoft/VBSi/whatever-it-was-called ;)

Must admit, if I had more time (not to mention money), I'd be playing around with photography a lot more than I currently am. Ah, which reminds me, I'm off to Silverstone on Saturday, I'll have to get my kit sorted out - no wife to hold me back this year! (she's at home, 23 weeks pregnant!)

It is one of the down sides of being a bit interesting in Photography when your partner isn't or hasn't got a camera, you're forever feeling that you're either holding them up or running to catch up with them!

Some do take their photography way too far, not saying Kier does. My cousin is the same, he's well into it all and always buying very expensive equipment like Kier from eBay and such. Thing is though, he's got stuff still wrapped up from buying new years later. One day I said to him, what's the point of wasting big money on camera equipment you've never even ended-up using?

That's crackers!

For my cousin it most certainly is a case of just "WANTING" it.

When I gave up photography 6 years ago after my divorce, I sold 5 camera bodies, god-only-knows how many lenses, zooms, 3 tripods, 4 sets of studio lights, 13 backgrounds, strobes, filters, etc.
It is an expensive "hobby" for sure. But one that brings much satisfaction.

There was no insult, I just said there was no point in arguing because you never listen to other peoples arguments.

And where has Kier said he is a hobbyist photographer? While it isn't his career, he would be deemed a professional by most people.

Also, thousands of dollars of equipment when you use it for work = need.
