XF 2.2 Is there any way to improve default search/auto-complete without ES?

Since I run on shared server, is there any way to improve the default search/get auto-complete without getting ES? (and thus having to upgrade web hosting).

I mean auto-complete when typing into the search box

Yes the Xon SI add two minor improvements to the basic search, but most of it is for ES.
