XF 1.5 Is there a development tutorial for implementing XenForo usergroup permissions?

I'm would like to point developers of a WAF service to an explanation of how XenForo 1 permissions work / can be implemented.
Is there documentation somewhere? Something to give them a head start.

That doesn't really give information on development. Thanks for looking it up though.
I have found a few addons that mainly implement usergroup permissions. I have pointed them to that. I hope they will not give up.
