The formatting frame (bold, italic, etc) doesnt appear on the iphone

That's an iPhone issue, doesn't appear on mine either.

Same here, and I did talk to someone at iphone support, and it is, indeed, an iPhone browser issue.

Indeed, the input handling stuff isn't triggered by the iPhone so you can't type into it. This has to be changed at the iPhone/mobile WebKit level.
