As designed Inconsistent avatar sizes on What's New widgets

This might be by design, but it looks strange to me:
The avatar size on Latest posts is different from Latest profile posts and Latest resources.

The Latest resources is an icon for the resource, the mini avatar is the author.

The difference between Latest posts and Latest profile posts may be by design as you can interact with the profile posts much like viewing a profile.

Shrinking the resource icon would end up with more wasted vertical space as well (given that they have 3 lines). The different sizes are to be expected here. They're just how each section looks in its standard view and as they are separate blocks (which are all customizable widgets), I don't think they should be an expectation they they be identical. The column layout is different for example.
