I've always had the width set to 1100 with the height box blank, it's worked well until 1.3 where you get a strange problem of some large height images being uploaded that come out tiny and blurred when re-sized.

Filling in the height box with a number solves it. Not so much a bug but had me stumped for a while.

I think you're actually referring to "Maximum Attachment Image Dimensions". Regardless, this should now be fixed. The issue would have happened before if the width was left blank as well.
