When uploading images, its often handy to be able to apply a text caption to the image. Some examples of how its frequently used is in news articles or to describe who is who or what is what in a picture.
In forum posts, such image caption can be used to add quick byline, an image title or an explanation of the image.

This is my pet fish. I like him a lot.

Interesting fish for sure :)

I'm not sure what is being asked for?

Possibly a 'box' BBCode to put around the picture & text to limit the size of text/picture, and then have regular text outside of that? A blog/cms look?

?

When uploading an image, a caption field could be added, where users can fill in a caption text. If it is left blank then no caption is added.

The less bbcode the better IMHO. A text field to fill in is more user friendly than users needing to learn to use a bbcode. And you can have only so many buttons in your editor.

That would be great. In fact we use the attachment description hack for vBulletin since 3.0 days. We have 859377 attachments with descriptions (captions), out of 3037795 attachments, so this feature is used quite often. Once your members get a hang of it, there is no turning back.

Most image filenames are nondescriptive anyway.
Could you please explain what point you are making? Image caption does not relate to file names. its a description or name, that members add to it.
Google Images uses the caption to bring members to your site, who are searching on that search engine.
