If XenForo's finished, what's next?

It seem like it's all going the way of the dinosaur anyway, if I look back at all the forums I used to attend over the years nearly all of them are either dead or gone, mine is barely hanging on by a thread as it is. I don't think we can blame any forum software for a global shift to social media.

Also happy to look at other alternatives to hosting your own community while keeping it inviting and lively outside of the few mega billion dollar corporations who have it all cornered.
Mine's doing ok :-) Maybe it depends on the topic. Members like the software.

I have to agree that all the doom and gloom posting make forum admins like me (cloud hosted) a bit nuts! If the cloud version, which I love as I don't have to do anything but participate in the discussions went away there are 2 forums in our hobby that would disappear. Mine first as cloud hosted and the other would be around (as I believe its self hosted) until the tech dried up that supports it life.
I will say that any problems I've had over the last few years have been addressed quickly through the ticket service and the XF team has helped, heck, even bailed me out of some self inflicted problems without fail.

I'm not savvy enough to code unless I want to break something and don't have it in me to learn another platform or pay to redevelop. Our members contribute to the cost of the forum being up and current and I don't believe, well maybe, they'd be interested in supporting a rebirth at the cost.

So in short (and to the OP) our site would probably just fade into retirement.

Never understood the notion of being upset with people posting their own frustrations with the current status quo.
I'd say nobody is upset with that. What annoys people is when the same people

a) post the identical tirades again and again for months.Everybody has read them already countless times. They don't change a thing. In the good old usenet days one of the golden rules was "post something new" - this applies to forums as well. If in a forum anyone posts the very same content 20 times at some pont people will get annoyed.

b) can't stop to post endless FUD w/o any foundation and in heavy rotation. This is simply destructive, often simply disinformation and in many forums they would be banned if they don't stop doing so.

We are all sitting in the same boat: No one knows what is going on, investments for further development of the own forums are delayed and even those who have no rush to upgrade have become very annoyed about the shambolic communication by XF. We are in a phase of insecurity, all XF customers together, this is our boat.

Now imagine you were in a boat on the ocean, insecure about where all this is going as we have no map and no idea how distant the land is and we know that a small team is steering the boat towards a harbor but in the end we don't see any movement (we are in the open sea) and those guys on the machines stopped communicating. We don't know where they are heading to, we don't know if or when we arrive - all we know is that all of the predictions of the crew have proven false and now they have stopped communicating. Everyone on the boat is thus somewhat unhappy. some more, some less.
A bunch of the people with you on this boat can't stop to cry "we will all die" endlessly and very loudly while others phantasize about sea monsters that would soon be there to eat us all (which they claim to have absolute safety about) while again others can't stop complaining that the boat clearly lacks a bigger swimming pool and food used to be better in former times as well. And others that the world will end if we don't get fancy blinking lights and a new paint job for our boat by tomorrow. All of that in endless, ever repeating tirades while those whiners additionally complain that not all passengers of said boat would complain in the same way and not as loud as they do.
At the same time life isn't too bad: The boat swims and there are no signs that it will sink or any other dangers and in the end it is a stable boat. A comfy and safe cruise ship, not the most modern features, but proven to withstand storms and technically sound. Enough food, the weather is fine, everything works as it should, we even have internet.
Imagine the situation and what that small crowd of loud whiners would do to the mood of the passengers - I bet: Sooner or later you'd be annoyed by them, too.

What is better. To stay real with the situation and express feedback as the days grow longer with no official comms? Or just sit quiet, watch the ship sink, and get frustrated with other customers and enthusiasts for expressing concerns?

Its like people such as you would rather feedback get buried about the reality of the current XF situation. That makes no sense.

To stay real with the situation
And here we go again... You should have realized in the meantime that what you consider "real" is not considered as such by many others on this forum. Maybe even not by most others.
express feedback
an essential feedback rule is to be constrictive. Endless, repeating tirades of the same accusations, theories, claims and insults is the opposite: It is destructive. You can be pretty sure that your "feedback" has been read - you've posted it often enough. So often, that the mod asked you to search yourself a new hobby. It is tiring and it is no feedback, it is destructive whining and you behave like you wereowner or shareholder of the company which you clearly are not.. There is probably a reason why both threads with the topic of 2.4 got adminstratively closed recently and probably your endless destructiveness has it's share on that decision.
Or just sit quiet, watch the ship sink, and get frustrated with other customers and enthusiasts for expressing concerns?
Does it sink? If you think it sinks you better should look for another one... Rather earlier than later - all the demands that you have phrased what XF ought to be won't be fulfilled anyway, if you are realistic.

Other than that: Customers have given feedback and have shown their frustration for months. Almost all in a constructive way and way more fact oriented and more polite than you. Many people are concerned and XF do still not communicate. Do you honestly think this will change when you keep posting your destructive and fact-free tirades? The same tirades, that you have been posting for months now countless times? Do you really think this will change anything, let alone make the situation better for anyone?
Its like people such as you would rather feedback get buried about the reality of the current XF situation. That makes no sense.
Once more you claim things about other people that you cannot know and are not shy to insult others. Obviously you still think you are the only clever guy on earth, the only relevant customer of XF and everyone that does not exactly share your opinion is dumb. Impossible that anyone could have an opinion or behaviour that is even the slightest bit different from your's and still valid.

Go on, fill another thread with your tirades until it gets closed for good reasons. It is already astonishing that a thread like this has been left open in the customer forums of a software vendor. One can be pretty sure that all the destructiveness in this forum makes potential buyers thinks twice before they buy XF, so you actively harm the business that you claim you want to protect and have done so for many months.

The concerns and irritations that many have admitted: These forums are intended to be constructive and helpful for other users. They are no longer in wider parts, they have become an area of yelling, FUD and insults and have lost the fun. Congratiulations. If that was what you wanted to achieve you were successful.
