If XenForo's finished, what's next?

Yes, the title is pretty self explanatory as is the OP.

There are very very few people in the developed world where people stick with the same job they started with till retirement. Most people look for better opportunities, growth etc. But i can understand others who are complacent and have this trauma that somewhere else will be worse and therefore never step out of their comfort zone as a result of the fear.
Mental outlook.

I am with the same company, on an amazing salary, that I have been with since apprentice.

I enjoy my work and the company is great to work for. Why would I leave?!

I doubt Xenforo will ever be discontinued, given that it has thousands and thousands of active installations...
What's certain is that today, even vBulletin releases monthly updates, fixing small bugs and adding improvements, while Xenforo has been down for months... and that's truly sad...
He even put in Christmas-themed graphics, which is silly but at least it makes his presence felt by his community who pay to buy their license...

lol... I was coming here to say something along those lines... of course that ignored the legality of forking it, but someone could push out what are effectively new versions via a big addon.
I wish XenForo would consider pivoting to an OSS model like what nodeBB has done. Continue to sell the cloud offering and have paid support plans for those of us that want quicker turnaround on bug fixes (I'd pay for it).

I still find it crazy the homepage of xenforo has customer logos and when you click on them, it links to their community using alternative software to xenforo...

Would be the end.

I had a quick look through and most of the sites listed on the homepage still seem to be using XF from what I can tell. So maybe they are just not aware of it.

Even if my remaining forums were profitable (they're not, really) I can't imagine a scenario by which I'd ever give Xenforo more revenue. The lack of communication has strayed into utter contempt for the customer. I feel like I'm on a secure version and that is where I will stay.

Just took a look at the XenForo customer scroll pane... what did catch my attention is that the forum software that the various sites migrated to (no longer using XF) had something all in coming:

1. Minimalistic Design.
2. Less focus on the user 'fluff' and more focus on the posted content.
3. 'Endless' scrolling.
4. Corporate.

Which has me contemplating something about forums as we all know, and not just limited to XenForo:

What can be done to streamline discussion forums so that they do not take a backseat in todays age of social media?

There is no denying discussion forums no longer have the golden appeal that social media (X, FB, Reddit, etc.) and rich media (YouTube, TikTok, Twitch, etc.) websites can provide. Forums, from my point of view these days, are generally laser focused on a particular topic or product that a company/corporation provides and are no longer designed with 'community longevity' in mind. On the flipside, over the past five years in particular, community based forums have been seemingly losing out on user interactions and those users migrated to other mediums.

Which leads me to the following questions stemming from that thought and my own initial question (layering questions now!):
  • Is it the need for real-time content to show up (Facebook Comments like)?
  • Does a forum need to be rethought at the design level (Discourse Designs)?
  • Does a forum need better gamification as a means to capture users (Reddit)?
  • Does a forum simply need to be streamlined to support faster discussion (Discord)?

That was in June. Why post that and then never follow up with anything? Yeah, sure, we're still technically only "weeks" since that post, but who is thinking 20 weeks when someone says they'll get back to you in the "coming weeks"? My guess is nobody. So is it wrong for us to have assumed we'd have some "exciting details about what these features are and how they work" by now?

2.3 has been in active development for quite some time and we expect to start running HYS threads in the coming weeks.

This was said about 2.3 in July 2022, the first HYS for 2.3 was posted in September 2023 (somewhere around 60 weeks), so there is definitely precedent
