Ideal width for Fixed theme ?

I have never design any theme before, until xf motivated me to make one this time.
I wanna know what is the ideal width for a fixed theme ?

I usually go for 1000px for my community.

992px is the max you can go to fit 1024px screen resolution like the iPad.
