I feel sorry for the Vbulletin brand.

I don't doubt Kier capabilities, else I would not have been here. But in software world legacy, backword compatibility and consistancy is critical for continutiy. To give an analogy, keeping all hatred about MS aside, its not that technically MS can not create a better windows like mac, but they need to take care of all the customers, developers and partners and ecosystem build around windows, they can not just throw it away and start a fresh. VB was in a somewhat similar situation, they had to maintain continuity and backward compatibility that puts limitations on what you can do. Entire Jesoft-IB-XF saga gave a chance to Kier to start completely fresh with no baggage at all which now resulted into a much much superior product than ... whatever forum script you want to name it.

I doubt that.. if Kier had total control at vB before IB came into the picture. I think vB4 would've been what XF 1.0 will be.

He just never got the chance and had to find other means. I don't blame the guy, I been there in that situation before. Where you know you can do something amazing, but need support and resources. However, you don't get any backup support or resources. And, that just destroys your plans inside.

@ Floris.

IB owns the database and domain, not Marco, me, or any other Admin there, just as Jelsoft did before them, so unless IB suddenly decided to give it away (or even sell it) - then becoming independant of them would be a non starter, there would be no domain or data.

Paul:

Who owns the content / database on vBorg?

If the boss Marco and the other 3 admins under him decide that the best interest for the site might be XenForo or IPB or a more generic (support for all forum products) direction is the best path to move to, ditching the domain and moving to a new host should be sufficient. Marco can move the site over to you for example and step down avoiding non-compete (if he even has that clause in his employer contract)

If vBorg is dying and version 3.6 runs fine. And it can do so much better reaching a bigger audience. Why not go independent? It's an option right?

Let's say it is .. who owns the content/database - is that Marco the owner of the site, or IB the owner of the IP, which includes vBorg?

I never thought about this, and have no opinion about it - besides that I think vBorg could be more like AdminExtra, etc. where it's a generic resource site. You guys could consider moving from under the IB umbrella to avoid further damage to reputation and popularity.

But thats a lot of funding... they need a server, and can handling lots of downloads etc.. Unless they start charging and even then IB could jump in and say they OWN it all.

I don't think vBorg has died too much compared to vBcom.

I sitll visit vBorg and it's a better place to be compared to the vBcom forums.

Yeah ok - thanks for clearing up. Not much Marco or others 'own' about vBorg then, it's all IB's IP.
