How to set custom permissions on viewing media items

Hi everyone,

I see that you can allow/disallow user groups to view a media gallery quite easily. However, I would like to disallow guests from viewing individual media items inside the media gallery, whilst still being able to scroll through and view the gallery as a whole.

Are there any preceding implementations of something like this? Is there an add-on that I should look into?

Update: as a conrete example, I want a guest to be able to see all the video thumbnails in the gallery, but not be able to view an individual video when clicking on one in the gallery.

I'd like this too. I disabled the "view media gallery" permissions but the problem is it hides the "media" tab on the forum. So it seems like the forum has no media.

I want guests to see the media gallery tab and media gallery thumbnails then when they click on the media gallery it should say "you need to sign in or register"
