Delete any which are not in use.

I think we have to do it ourselves again ...
The following SQL query deletes all unused tags.

Caution, this can only be undone with a backup!
PhpMyAdmin...

DELETE FROM `xf_tag` WHERE `use_count` = 0

Sounds like a good reason for having a curated tags list, instead of allowing everyone to create them.

The solution by @Masetrix does not rebuild the tag blob from various content types. This will result in a mass of dead links.

I did not see this in acp can you expound? I do not use tags but I have one forum node where I would like to add some defined tags to use only in that forum. Is that possible? I already use prefixes there fyi. Thanks

there is a usergroup permission named Create new content tag. I believe this would restrict creation of a new tag. But thread permissions allows tagging content. You can create some tags and make them permanent. These should become available to users who do not have the ability to create a new tag.

Or if you want to manage the tags yourself, you can keep the tagging ability for moderators and admins. This works fine at my end.
