Add-on How to organise a world-wide 'places of interest' directory? (with map & geo sorting)

So - this isnt a calendar with xxx event happening in NYC September 2013

Its a 'cool places to visit' directory.

But for a world wide audience.

(why does someone in Moscow want to know abut a cool coffee bar in Manchester UK? - unless they are planning a trip there, then they might want to know.

So - how to manage a location directory ;/ with google maps integration?

it should gradually fill out with places as members add them

Is there an Add On that can do this?

I would think the RM might do this with its Categories.Adding some custom fields would help to guide people what kind of info to give. Opening hours for example. Places are bad at putting those on a website. Most listings dont give them.

But there's a problem with directories that rely on user input which is motivating them to input!
To start with the problem is a directory doesn't have much info.
Later on the data is out of date. It really needs someone to trawl it and check it.

I've seen successful sites on here that focus on a local area directory - a city or county, maybe a state.
For a larger scope TripAdvisor already has it covered. So taking that on asks the question what does this site do that TripAdvisor doesn't?
