How do you make the thumbnails on the sidebar bigger?

Edit the sidebar_online_users template and change the avatar from s to m.
You will also need to add some CSS to EXTRA.css to change the image size to 96px.

For the new threads, you will need to ask in the add-on thread as that is not a core feature.
