XF 2.1 How to highlight a navigation tab for custom page (not a page node)?

I have some custom pages (created through custom php, not through the page node options) which reside outside of the XenForo forum structure and include the XenForo header and footer. I want to be able to highlight new navigation tabs I have created when I am on those custom pages. Being new to XenForo I'm still just beginning to understand the code and can't figure out how to go about doing this.

Is there a way to set a specific variable and then reference it within the navigation settings?

...any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Is this possible? You might be able to use the Extra attributes to achieve it. The only other thing is in development mode but think you need a controller for this..

It is one of the options integrated into an add-on I paid to get developed about 18 months ago and that I believe is still being sold by the original developer @vbresults.
