How can I search for specific exif data in the Media Gallery, i.e. for the ISO speed or for the camera model or lens?

It would a pitty if all the data is already available automatically but is not used in the search option!

Apparently that's not the case because this is the first time I'm hearing about it.

I guess because the other photogallery addon of Sonnb had it from day 1 on and so most of the photo oriented sites bought that addon

There is now a huge opportunity for the XF-Team, since Sonnb seems not to support his photogallery addon anymore. Just look what kind of features that addon has since 7 years already and you know what more photo-oriented sites want to have.

These are all "minor" additions to XFMG, but these little things make a huge difference in the usability for that target group. So small investments for you, but with big revenue opportunities

Just because the feature exists in another product doesn't automatically make it a "must have".

Many users of that add-on already made their way over to XFMG (because most people are migrating to XF2 already). But it's rather telling that, despite its existence over the last 5-6 years that no one has ever taken the time to suggest it as a must have feature for our product, until now.

How hard would it be to implement this (either in Xf1.5x version or XF 2.x version). Could you give me a quote for a customized "addon" for this?

You would have to post a request on the relevant forum.

I'd strongly recommend doing that for XF2 as XF1 will be no longer supported or maintained in the coming months.
