How long should you keep URL redirections?

I just wondered once VB4 url redirection is in place and working is it ok to remove the redirect scripts after x amount of time? Or you it always be there.

Most of my redirects worked but some don't and give 500 error codes, for example links to VB polls such as http://www.xyz.com/forums/XXX/poll-211-a.html

It doesnt hurt to just let them sit, until you are sure the search engines have updated all indexed pages.

Thanks, Im just concerned that I have quite a few old VB4 SEO urls that return error code 500 and a blank page rather than redirect them,
