How do you treat with toxic backlinks posted by competitors?

I’m very interested in this. Although I am not aware or sure they were due to competitors, I do appear to have quite a lot.
I have never paid for links, but I have been informed they are there by an SEO audit.
Some I have entered into Google disavow tool, however I have seen conflicting views on whether this is good or not.
