How can I pass a variable to the ad_above_content template?

Currently I pass a variable with my Banner add-on by extending the ControllerPublic_Forum file. This works fine for passing a variable for the forum_list template. But what would I need to do to pass a variable instead to the ad_above_content and the ad_below_content templates?

I think you will need to create global variable
