I have been using hhvm for some time now (November 2014) I created a guide about the setup I use: Tutorial: Install XenForo using Nginx and HHVM on Fedora.
Only difference I have right now is that I run it over a socket instead of tcp.
But so far it has been faster then php for me normally it takes some requests before it is nicely running but when it does the load times sometimes halves. (I am not a expert I test this with "time" command).
I have not seen any issues with cpu at all and I currently use the cheapest digitalocean server and it seems to work fine with 512mb memory.
