XF 2.1 Help with configuring user upgrades

For this particular program, there is a special intro rate for the first three months. After that, to continue, the member pays the full rate.

I'm unsure how to set this up. At the moment, I have created two different upgrades.

1. The first 3-month intro upgrade which is set as for only 3 months recurring payments (PayPal).
2. The regular rate as a recurring subscription (Permanent).

First I want to make sure that a user cannot resubscribe to the intro rate after the first three months.

Second, it might be preferable to have a single recurring subscription with the first 3 months discounted. Is this possible?

What is the best way to set all this up?

Generally speaking, I don't think this is a concept we really expose via the user upgrade system (or the payment system). I don't see a particularly obvious way to do it within XF itself.
