Forums are not public spaces, freedom of speech doesn’t exist (no, seriously, the First Amendment isn’t relevant), admins can (and always have been able to) decide whatever rules they want over and above the law of the land.
I could, if I wanted to, outline that every post must contain the letter Q or be deleted if I wanted to do that, because what I say on my private site is just that, private property. No different than if I came to your house as a guest, said a bunch of things you didn’t like and kicked me out - ain’t no 1A protection there.
Forum admins have always been dictators of their fiefdoms. Some just more benevolent than others.

In my opinion, you're bang on with this. I've told my members for years that the site is a democratic dictatorship. I'll ask for opinions but bottom line it's always my decision on what happens.

Funny but once again true. I operate the same. At large, we put things to a vote, and generally I will side with whatever the team decides (99% of the time) but ultimately, it is down to me to impose whatever we have decided upon. Now, that doesn't make me a dictator but an "administrator".

I'm thorough when it comes to rules mate.
When laws change you have to learn how to adopt them and adapt to them.
Most of them are to do with what kids see online.
You think my rules are strict. My mate's rules are stricter because he runs bigfooty.com
Mine are a fair copy but shorter.
I'm supportive of his forum. Even if he pranks me often enough.

I used to love Twitter before Elon Musk took over. In my opinion, it was less problematic and easier to use. That's something that's no longer there.
