I just think this could mostly be solved by the developers supporting two separate default themes. One would be a theme like the default theme is now, and one would be a new theme with a more modern, intuitive and simpler interface that takes the best from Facebook, Reddit, Discord, and from traditional forums and creates something new and exciting that is slick, easy to navigate and mobile focused.
In the end, all we are doing is storing and retrieving content to and from a database and displaying that content in a user interface for end users to read and interact with. The time has come to do something new and exciting for those who aren't enamored with the traditional old school forum look.
