My father works for a large US company but in the UK. He's had to go over to the company headoffices in NY a few times and he told me about an interesting discussion he had with a few of the US workers when he was there.
Basically they got onto the subject of guns, and they couldnt understand why we, in the UK didnt have guns.
The argument was "but how do you protect yourself". To which my dad replied "well we dont really need to. Nobodoy owns a gun...so you dont need to defend yourself from someone with a gun, as they cant get a gun in the first place".
There was a long pause...and then the penny dropped "Oh....that's actually pretty clever...".
Here's how I see it:
Every time you ask someone why they are pro-guns, they go on about it being their right and that its in the consitution, like it's set in stone. Here's the deal though. As part of the constitution, alcohol was banned. Yet it was repealed. The same can (and should) be done for guns. There's simply no logical reason to own one.
You wouldnt keep a bottle of anthrax in your cupboard 'just incase', so why should you keep a gun.
One person said it was 'to protect my family from the government' which I just found crazy.
If only law enforcement had guns, there would not be these deaths - thats pure and simple fact. Your gun crime rate would drop hugely. Sure, there will always be ways of getting guns, but it would be a hell of a lot harder.
It's just crazy that people - anyone - can think its normal to carry around something designed to kill.
