XF 2.2 Friendly urls

I have installed a lot of xenforos on different internet servers from diofferent hosters and after setting the RewriteBase everything is fine normally.

But i cant use the friendly urls on a normal, clean install of Ubuntu at a home server.
The usual

RewriteBase /

doesnt help. I tried it many times, but something is missing with the apache, but what?
I can use xf but only without friendly urls. There is nothing in the logs.

If you're doing everything as you normally would, I guess it's possible mod_rewrite just isn't enabled in Apache, so that's what I'd check first.
