I read mike saying they use bits of the zend framework in the xF framework

No ORM if you're talking about something like Doctrine. Bits are used from Zend Framework.

Does that mean even though they aren't using most of it, the zend framework will still be of access to us devs, if so i can see some major 3rd party mods coming along

As far as I know, they only have a couple of classes from Zend in there, so it probably won't be of much use. Also, I think I read somewhere they want to eventually replace the Zend parts with their own anyway.
