Would love to see this implemented as a core function.
I'd expect this to never become a feature as it is virtually impossible to implement, at least if the requirement is to reduce DB writes to an absolute minimum.wow 10 years past and this has not seen the light yet!

Forcing users into guests on the other hand should be fairly easy, but would not achieve the same effect as closing the board.
I have but it does not have to be the exact way suggested by OP. The suggestion revolves around forum in read mode only when closed. How is that going to be implemented is left to XF developers but the whole point of read mode is to prevent users from posting anything when board is closed.Have you read the entire thread?
The suggestion is to block (almost) all DB writes, so there is way more then just posting that would need to be disabled.
Even if there was support in the core to handle every situation that could cause a DB write, this would also need to be done in ever Add-on.
Disabling permissions does not solve that.
Thanks, but that link takes me to "The requested resource could not be found." Is there an updated link?An add-on allowing read-only mode has been posted here.

I think this should make it into 2.4.
Relatively easy to do ?
