Intended audience

End users looking for a niche/community to have discussions in. However, forum admins are welcome to claim (or add) their listings and make changes or add updates to them, such as an update that a new feature has been added; though, most of these are automated already.

Intentions behind ForumDiscovery

I've encountered many issues with admins of directories or forum showcases who critiqued the content of one of my forums and/or the domain it's hosted on. Instead of whining on about it, I came up with the concept of a comprehensive forum directory. Finally, there’s a showcase/directory that doesn’t judge the content of your forum, but instead evaluates whether it keeps users safe—and not from ideas, but rather, from downed forums or forums that may have malicious intent.

In the ForumDiscovery directory, all views are welcome, just the mature ones are hidden from guests.

Launch of ForumDiscovery

The directory has officially launched with 75 forums (to make the initial claim as "the largest" for forums) and is queued to add 10-25 more per day from a pre-defined list of 100s of forums gathered by searching Google and pulling from showcase threads here and in other places. If you're a forum admin and want to get your forum listed immediately, use the contact form, and I’ll make sure it gets bumped up in the queue so that you can have that backlink quicker.

By pure coincidence, ForumDir (@CedricV) — which offers a unique 2000s era "topsites" feature that I brushed off in early planning — launched a couple of days before this. However, I’ve been working on this forum for the last part of August, customizing the templates, rephrasing add ons so everything seamlessly fits the theme as a forum directory, and creating tools/add ons custom to the directory to better automate it and to keep visitors safe.

What is Not Allowed

Third-party hosted forums (Proboards, etc.) as I don't feel you own the forum and forums by Big Corporations (the ones that buy up forums).

What is allowed

Any self-hosted (or Cloud) forum whether it's XenForo, vB, IPS/IPB, SMF, Discourse, MyBB, phpBB, etc.

If your forum fits that description, you can use the contact form to ensure you're on the list to be added. Though, there's a high guarantee that it will be in the near future already.

Forum Listing Changes

If you see your forum listed, you can either join the forum to claim the item and make the changes yourself or use the contact form to address any changes. Otherwise, it will be handled automatically by pulling down boards that are deemed malicious, have gone down, or have turned into parked pages (dead forums). Screenshots will be automatically updated on a weekly-to-monthly basis to ensure that the end users click through to the site that they intended to visit and don't feel baited.

Special Thanks

Special thanks to @CedricV for the conversation that racked my brain a little to make a few minor changes before the launch.

Also to @JoyFreak for the PurpleFreak theme. It only seemed fitting to make JoyFreak the first listing because of the copyright removal (as I plan on purchasing Brand Removal for this license soon enough and don't want a cluttered copyright footer).

And almost forgot, a special thanks to @BassMan for some custom CSS!

Thanks for the shoutout. The forums look great especially with the theme 😜. Good choice. I’m not sure if I read it correctly but it’s free to remove the copyright so no need to purchase any branding removal. All the best!

but it’s free to remove the copyright
I read it. I just felt it was appropriate to add you first as that was the last template modification on XF before shifting into the directory.

Cheers for the theme! 🍻

The branding removal was in reference to XF's $350 add on.

Looks good but it doesn't seem like members who register can't add their forums to the directory.......if you're going to be the only one who can add forums, this doesn't seem very helpful for people....

They can add their information to the contact forum/contact form for now.

It's already been seeded with 75 forums and there's a queue of 100s to be trickled out over the next several days to weeks as to not spam flood content.

The forum you want to add is likely already in the queue, but if you DM it on here or there, I can put it in the front, wherein you can claim it and edit it after approval.

A forum admin contacted me to update their board from vBulletin to Xenforo.

By looking at their forum, I have to admit that it was quite clear to be Xenforo, which only means the automation isn't perfect, especially on modified sites.

I'll have to nail this down when I get around to populating a new feature that showcases a forum's thread count, message count, member count, and established date. With as many different boards and styles using different phrases for each, this task will be a bit harder to automate, but it might work fine on lightly modified default styles/themes to add to, hopefully, more than 1/2 the listings automatically.

Before I update the automator to go through and try to get those statistics, I'm going to try to ensure it can get the board right, at the very least, not to say it doesn't have a high success ratio already.

Until then, admins can claim their forums and update the information to include as much or as little information as necessary.

Look for this block to Claim your listing.

In order to prevent vandalism of forums by competitors, we use a moderately light hand to strict two-factor authentication method before we hand the forum over.

The first method is easy. If you sign up with a @yourforum.com email, we will send a code to it that you must send back to us in private. Otherwise, we will send it through your contact form or join your forum to send it to the admin(s) listed, which must then be sent back to us.

The goal is not only to be the largest forum directory, but to also have everything safe for visitors (as mentioned), and forums owned by their respectful owners for authenticity.

Great work, I like it.
Thank you.

The traffic and time on the page suggests that it may be giving forums some more exposure, shedding light on forums and hopefully adding popularity to them over the alternative, Facebook Groups shudders. It would be interesting to see if any admins of forums here who have their forums listed could report back on whether they've seen forumdiscovery in utm_source and what the utm_content mainly is to emphasize those links/placement of others more to try and drive more traffic their way.

To you and other admins, feel free to "Add Forum..." at any time if it's not already listed, and it'll be listed in the next dump.

The only change made to the site that was made since posting this is another style that seemed more fitting and XF 2.3 compatible, though there are a few projects in the works to make it a better directory. I'll update this thread when those come online.
