XF 2.3 Featured threads template on "above nodes"

How can I make the leading featured article to appear half, just as the others below?
For example I want to have a block of 2, and then another 2 below, without a leading article that takes the space of 2..

Unfortunately you can't do that without custom CSS/HTML or custom development.
