XF 2.1 Expand/Collapse nested sub menu

We have public navigation that points to a category containing several forums with sub-forums. This makes for a huge drop-down on desktop and mobile. Has anyone customized the navigation to make a sub menu item expand/collapse? I found this tutorial, but I'm guessing that the javascript is already in XF somewhere because the main navigation items do expand and collapse on the mobile menu. We would like certain sub-menus to expand/collapse on the desktop and mobile navigation.

Screenshots show “forums” expanding. Can we make navigation groupings like “find threads” or “watched” expand and collapse?

I've asked for this before, but didn't really get anywhere. There is a person (CTA?) that has a master navigation across the top of the screen but its a bit cumbersome.

All I want is the ability to have all those navigation options collapsed by default.
