XF 2.2 Excluding closed threads from What´s new

For housekeeping we´re auto-closing threads where the last post is x-days old with a new message added, explaining why the thread was closed. Is there anything available in the stock software, to exclude closed threads from What´s new, as these rolling procedure cloggs the What´s new widget?

You could modify the template and filter out threads in the for each which are closed.
