XF 2.3 Email error: 550 Sender rate overlimit

I got a slew of these email errors lately:

Symfony\Component\Mailer\Exception\TransportException: Email to <...> from <...> failed: Process failed with exit code 11: 550 Sender rate overlimit - 13.7 / 1m src/vendor/symfony/mailer/Transport/Smtp/Stream/ProcessStream.php:60

Anyone with an idea what may be causing this?

At the risk of stating the obvious, the reason is the actual error text.

Too many emails have been sent in a set period of time.

are you using gmail to send?
they have a daily limit.
i still have to get back with tracy to get my amazon ses back working.
