XF 1.5 Disable user mentions

I want to disable user mentions for a specific user group.

Maximum mention alerts per message: is set to 0 but they can still use mentions because it's a secondary user group.

Is there no way to restrict a user from using the mentions feature without an addon?

It's not possible to 'revoke' permissions with numerical values - the higher value will take precedence.

You could create a new user group mimicking the one they are already in but set it to 0, then move those members to that group.
