DigitalOcean Cloud VPS

This company and their vps are very interesting...
my only problem is that I don't have the time and the competences to learn how to use it.

Do you think that it could be a good idea to hire somebody (perhaps somebody here at xenforo) to setup the system for me and move all my data, so that I can benefit from a reliable and fast server containing the costs?
beauty of DO is cheap hourly costs and flexibility, so you try it for an hour or two and then destroy the droplet/VPS and come back later and re-try/play with when you do have spare time.

DO also has awesome guides see https://www.digitalocean.com/help/getting-started/setting-up-your-server/ and https://www.digitalocean.com/help/getting-started/learn-more-about-linux/ and heaps of articles https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles

I moved to DO from wiredtree recently and I am in love with DO. If you can type and follow a tutorial there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to run a server on your own.

I use a $5 DO instance for my Ghost Blog. It is running Ubuntu 12.04, nginx, node, and apf/iptables firewall.

It wouldn't be enough for my XF site but Digital Ocean is very nice.

And again, remember to take plentiful backups (you should do that with any host). There is nothing "cloud" about DO, and the fact that they run RAID5 drive configs on their VPS nodes is just an accident waiting to happen. Make sure you have a good, working backup or two of your data.

With their latest financing round they are trying to compete more directly with AWS. http://www.eweek.com/cloud/digitalocean-raises-37.2m-in-new-funding-to-build-cloud.html

And on that note, have you tried setting up AWS from scratch? It's extremely overwhelming.

I think they have a pretty good offering. Should be interesting to see how it changes over the next year or two.
You should of seen AWS a few years back, alot more complicated and confusing. Seems a bit easier these days but still now where as easy as say Rackspace Cloud server or DigitalOcean server setups.

I'm going from managed vps to unmanaged. Instead of choosing DigitalOcean like I was going to last time, @MattW suggested that I give Linode a try since they have changed their pricing plans and that I would need a plan with at least 4GB of memory since I have a lot of addons. DigitalOcean's $40 Plan has 4GB memory but compared to Linode's $40 Plan with 4GB memory, it has 2 more CPU Cores and 36 GB more storage than DigitalOcean's.

Linode just recently changed their prices and started offering SSDs to match Digital Ocean. I might be using Linode again in the future on new projects, but it took them over a year to catch up.

For me, More CPU Core is More Important than storage :)
