XF 1.1 Creating a redirect

Quite a few topics belong in multiple Categories.
For example we have a News items thread in our general category.
When posting there I'd often like to make it redirect the user to another new thread in another Category. With a permanent Redirect.

Something like that can be done if I Merge threads so the function is there. I just can't get my head round how to use Merge to do it.

The problem is that Merge only works on two already existing threads.
If I have to make the two and then Merge them to get a Redirect it doesn't really make it any quicker and easier than making one of them a Closed thread with the link in it - which is what I have been doing.
