one of the only things i'm worried about is losing users, and posts.. i know all data is stored in .sql files but i have very little experience with MySQL. I know the basics of it but not sure how exactly i would go about importing the users, sections, and posts to the new forum software, are there any very detailed tutorials out there?

There is an importing script included in core, and it works pretty good (depending on how much you are importing). It is pretty much as simple as configuring the importer and press import.

You have nothing to worry about. The conversion will not touch the source forum in any way.
