Considering purchasing Xenforo but have a question about customization

There are a few different forum software that I am looking into, Xenforo being one of them. However I really just don't like how the forms and categories are stacked on top of each other vertically. Where you have to scroll up and down to go through all the different forum categories. It seems easier when the different forum sections and categories are along the top, horizontally. For example how you can with Mybb, Or maybe be able to make it so that the different forum categories can be collapsed like this, so you don't have to scroll through a bunch of forums that you have no interest in. Just wondering and if anyone can let me know, that would be great .

Xenforo is really customizable, and by far the easiest forum software to use to achieve the look you want.

Here is a link to my development site. I am about 10% complete in the look I am going for (for my writing/rp'ing site). Although I am not close to being done it should give you an idea of what XF is capable of, including listing forum categories in any matter you like (through template edits). PS, the style only supports the latest version of the popular browsers - a decision I made. http://www.xenfx.net/community/

I may be missing something but I don't even see a forum on your site at all? Anyway its good to know that it is customizeable, though most other sites that I have seen pretty much all look identical to each other. It seems to me from what I have seen is that other sites with other forum software, seem to all look different and a lot more customized, instead of looking the same.

The forums are located on the "map". It's an adventuring site so I wanted to make it look and feel like you are adventuring in a frozen wasteland. What I am working on is just an example of what you can achieve with XF. There is a feature of XF that makes it stand out against competitors, called pages. There is an example of one here (not finished as I need to integrate the DnD rule set into the forum first). http://www.xenfx.net/community/pages/temple-of-tempus-services/

With pages you can create anything you want.

I have seen that tabbed category navigation requested before, but to my knowledge no one has developed that feature for XF. Similar to MyBB but not quite the same is this addon which allows you to move categories into the main navbar:

Here is an addon for collapsing categories:

Wow, just amazing. Really well done, and that's just 10%? Looking forward to seeing it complete, really good job.

To be honest I am still learning myself and modifying what you want to modify in xenforo in very simple, I forgot about this thing but I also did this like a year ago with the categories, I'd would have to look for the addon I made out of it as I forgot about it until reading this post..but here...

now that i see that tabbed forum category selector thing from mybb I might have a try and see if I can add that...it could be useful and it may be possible to do without going crazy with it.

@Lawrence - that map concept is awesome
