Community Hive [Deleted]

I wrote to Invision and they said Communityhive was a different company.
That's what they have always maintained but there are support posts suggesting the lack of support since last December is due to work being carried out on version 5 of the forum software. So a different company with the same employees perhaps?

Regardless, this add-on has broken a lot of forums, is clearly unsupported and probably abandoned. Best to avoid I'd say.

It's a shame this didn't work. I'd love it if Xenforo could roll out something similar to this. People are always lamenting that "forums are dead", but one of the biggest sites on the web is technically a forum (reddit).

And while individually our forums aren't going to touch reddit, if there was a Xenforo aggregator app, where people could follow various forums, depending on their interest, it might be a good source of traffic and re-generate interest in "old school" forums perhaps.

I think the biggest issue would be adoption from forum owners, who often don't like change, and think it should still be 2004. ;)

The problem that is possible to be remedied is with aggregators you end up taking traffic away from the forum as people tend to just skim the aggregators and then disappear.

Even with reddit - I might be in the minority but I never browse reddit and haven't even registered but I'll check it if there's an answer in the search results but I won't contribute or just freely browse.

Even links that lead to fan pages on various social networks should be eliminated. Consider these aggregators like a beauty contest... Where there is always someone who has a straighter nose than yours.. 😅

It seems to be an abandoned project. I wrote to Invision and they said Communityhive was a different company. Minutes after getting that reply they deleted the file.

That's weird because they also said it's their company, not another, in the initial announcement:

We are creating a new free-to-use service to help independent communities reach new audiences and re-engage existing members.

The irony is how users over there were poking fun of XF in the announcement, and Invision bragging how they'd be the innovator and write the add-on. And since, it's turned out to be buggy, and have serious issues trying to uninstall it.

And now, they deny it's theirs, lol.

The announcement is still live here on https://invisioncommunity.com/

So they did certainly build it.

Their privacy policy also says:
This website is operated by Invision Power Services, Inc. doing business as Community Hive and whose registered address is PO Box 6154, Lynchburg, VA 24505

Four months ago apparently it wasn't dead and we are to follow Invision for updates. So unless they've dumped the project recently and unloaded it onto someone else? Which would seem very odd given the tight integrations.

It's a shame really, I actually thought there might have been a bit of hope for this. Invision seemed to have a promising mobile app in development for a while, then canned it unexpectedly.

When I saw community hive, I kind of figured they'd had a think about and it figured it would be better suited to repurpose the app as an aggregator and cross platform app, as opposed to just being for Invision. Which honestly makes sense, and people did actually like and enjoy years ago with the likes of forumrunner and tapatalk, before their business models and greediness tanked them.

Weird, shame really seeing as there's pretty much zero chance of ever getting an XF app and iOS PWAs will always be crippled and inferior to native apps by Apple for obvious business and monetisation reasons.

I agree with the general idea. We really need something that can bring forums back and compete with/replace Reddit. One problem with an aggregator is that they would likely become a "content police", deciding who gets to be shown and added to the site. We even saw that CH started off by allowing people to pay to show up on the front page, which is highly problematic.

The fediverse is the future. It allows for the same "feed browsing", but doesn't give central control to one entity. It also allows anyone across the fediverse to use their one account to interact with all other federated websites. And it allows them to choose the content they want to see, and which UI/platform to browse it with.

There's another thread on this:

@Jeremy P posted a solution in another thread.
@Paul B

I've tried this twice now. I'm not sure I have debug working properly. I added this $config['debug'] = true; to my config.php changed the xf.php to the older one and my board goes white with some black text saying the site is being updated.

How can you tell if you are in debug mode?

Do this step first, and confirm debug mode has been enabled before proceeding further. There will be some debug statistics in the bottom right of the footer if it is:

Try going to admin.php?add-ons/Communityhive/uninstall directly. If you still experience a white page with black error text, try adding the following to src/config.php as well, being sure to remove it after the add-on has been uninstalled:

PHP:
$config['enableListeners'] = false;

Also there is no 2.2.14 in my download
The 2.2.15 version should work in this case. If you still have trouble, you may open a ticket with both server credentials and an administrator account and I will take a closer look.

Does anybody knows the reason why its killed from the developers/invission?

I mean, yes, there were enough problems with the thing, but I think that the fact that the users weren't even informed about the end is pretty bad support.
And when I read on the former CH website that I was only a tester and should look forward to the second attempt with CH 2.0 at some point, I have to ask myself what they're taking at Invission.
I thought the idea was pretty good, the implementation... mixed. But if you can't even uninstall the garbage properly, then I really wonder.

I'm going to try uninstalling it now (I'm still on 2.2.15) and after everything, I really don't feel like trying again with version 2.0. ;-) :cautious:(n)

As far as I know they never gave a definitive reason but Invision the company seemed to want to distance themselves from the product by claiming it was being developed by another entity.

My perception is that Invision simply canned further development so they could use the manpower to focus on version 5 of their community software.

To be honest poor communication is indicative of how Invision tends to operate which is why the company attracts so much vitriol from its customers.
