I have up to 11000 concurrent members on my site and only a few hundred who should have chat access.
Previously cometchat kept bringing down my site. It didn't matter which third party service was used. One big problem was that it kept connecting to the database (for every user on my site) over port 80, which makes little sense to me.
Another problem is that their devs did not seem to know what they were doing and were working against each other. Bugs they fixed always reappeared in next releases. Devs touching things that were promised they would not touch.
Their chat history plugin is essential to us, but this has so many issues. CometChat still advises not to use this part of their software. Which I think is weird because they basically affirm part of their software is not functional but they do not rewrite this. So after seeing my site brought down again and again, I threw in the towel while still having a grand invested in it. I rather enjoyed not having to deal with my site getting nuked by cometchat.
But my users complained that the replacement chat was lame compared to the full featured cometchat. My users need a chat footer bar. Cometchat promised that they would have it nailed down this time. So they have set up a cheap VPS for me and we will be testing this setup. Preparations were not giving much hope, as support is still riddled by mistakes and Indian support staff doing and asking for senseless things. I'm still going through with it.
If this fails I will have to find an alternative, but so far I have found none. Arrowchat is really basic functionality wise. Most other chat solutions look outdated.

I have already paid them to create the following xenforo functionality:
Regarding cache: their release notes state that they do cache sessions now. This is something to enquire about.
I have asked @CometChat @CometChat Team to add cometchat to the resource manager. This would allow
Maybe they can answer some of the questions above.

I have already paid them to create the following xenforo functionality:
- chat room logs available to xenforo moderator usergroups
- integration with XF user upgrades: show chat bar to all users, but upon use forward guests to registration and members to user upgrades.
- xf usergroup permissions / banned state for all of cometchat, including web app
- chat report to XF report center
- temporary ban users
- staff chatroom permissions
- a bunch of chat xf-usergroup-permissions
