Given our members tend to be very vocal about media that is uploaded to our site - more "discussion thread" than "comments", sometimes things do get out of hand and we really need to be able to close the comments on individual media items to stop it from going too far.
This is actually an unintended (and previously unnoticed) consequence of our migration from a modified vBulletin+PhotoPost integration where we used actual threads for comments - when I migrated to XF+MG, I moved the threads into MG comments but then all the previously closed threads were no longer closed. Now some of our members are posting in those threads again, requiring careful moderator attention.
I think this is yet another reason to move to the RM style of doing things with comments as actual threads - that then gives us the flexibility to bring all the regular thread-based moderation tools to MG discussions.
