Will this work in xenForo 1.5.x too? I am due to upgrade to 2.x soon, but wanted to know if this work on this version as well.

Yes, use the paid Cloudflare service with Firewall turned on, then go into the modification and set rules for chines traffic. Since I did that for a few months ago I have 0 (ZERO) spam like no spam at all from china & russia etc.
