Best way to run XF on a local server? or any other software

I hate having to upload all kinds of files and whatnot for testing online when I am working on a design of modifications. I'd like to be able to set up a local server that only I can access, and be able to work from there. It would be quicker and more efficient for me.

I've looked online, but I'm not really sure what to use to set up a server, or anything really. Any recommendations or anything I should be aware of before I start? I know this is very vague, but I really could use the help!

All help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I was just looking at that. I think I'll give it a go and see what it can do! Thank you!

I also used xampp, but after Kier's demo of how to use intellisense in Eclipse, I have decided to switch to using Zend Server CE.

I'd also recommend Zend Server CE.

Thanks, but I got it all set up and I'm even using custom urls for my different test sites! It's really great and makes my life much easier!
