FWIW, I'm not seeing this in Gmail with Chrome or Firefox, though I did just make a tweak to the image source today (but nothing else).

The avatar box changes based on the amount of text that is written in a single message. For example:

It looks like the message box isn't fixed, but the avatar is.

If you enlarge the window CTRL & "+" it displays correct.

Nice find! Setting that to 100% stops the background from scaling out of the avatar

I've just done an e-mail template modification to the above template files

Replace
<td width="90%" style=

With
<td width="100%" style=

I'm not sure why we went with that - might be a leftover sort of thing. So good catch! I've changed them all to 100% width - the image size should dictate the remaining width.
