Auto resizing of an image - would it be possible for this?

So, on my main style for the forum I'm working on, I have put an image inside the quote box as here:-


I'm pretty happy with how it looks, but unfortunately when something is quoted that doesn't require a lot of space, like below:-


as you can see, the image is cut off.

So, I'm wondering would it be possible to either

a) shrink the image automatically on smaller quotes;
or
b) have it not put the image when the quote box is smaller than a certain size?

Any suggestions/help would be appreciated
